Mountain Heritage Weekend Features Music, Arts, Crafts, WV Wineries at Stonewall Resort June 9

05/11/2012

Weston, WV (May 2012) – West Virginia traditional music, Appalachian food, arts and crafts and state wineries will be featured during Stonewall Resort’s Mountain Heritage and Mountain Lakes Food & Wine Festival, to be held June 9, resort officials announced.

“West Virginia is a treasure trove of culture and heritage, and we will be showcasing the many traditional facets of our state such as music and arts and crafts that make us a destination for travelers far and wide,” said Mike Hager, general manager at Stonewall Resort.

“People may not realize it, but West Virginia also has a number of wineries within its borders producing a wonderful variety of quality wines, and we will be providing guests at our Mountain Lakes Food & Wine Festival an opportunity to sample them,” Hager noted.

Hager said the Mountain Heritage Festival, which is partially sponsored by the Lewis Co. Chamber of Commerce and the Stonewall State Park Foundation, will kickoff Friday evening June 8 at 7 pm with traditional West Virginia music provided by the Falling Branch Band.  In addition, Mountain Echoes, a traditional storytelling duo, will present children’s storytelling at 8 p.m.

The weekend gets in full swing on Saturday June 9, when the Falling Branch Band provides bluegrass and traditional mountain music on the Roanoke Activity Plaza Outdoor Stage beginning at 1:30 p.m. followed by more children’s storytelling from 3 to 4 p.m. Musical act DC Grass will perform at 4 p.m.  Mountain Echoes will then present an “Appalachian Sampler” of stories from 5 to 6 p.m. The Hillbilly Gypsies, with opening act DC Grass, will perform from 7 – 9 p.m.

Jackson’s Mill will present its “History Hitting the Road” demonstration throughout the afternoon and early evening on Saturday, which provides guests a look into the arts, trades and modes of transportation from the early 19th century.  Additionally, guests can peruse a plethora of crafter booths, check out the barnyard petting zoo and take the little ones on a pony ride (for a small fee).

Hager noted that the Mountain Lakes Food and Wine Festival will take place on the resort’s Adler Patio at the lodge overlooking Stonewall Jackson Lake.  The event will run from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday.  The $10 per person admission fee (must be 21 years old) includes wine sampling, a wine glass and corkscrew.

Stonewall Resort is offering a special nightly room rate of $119 for the weekend, which includes breakfast.  For guests lodging at the resort, Little Sorrel, the resort’s excursion boat, will offer tours of Stonewall Jackson Lake throughout the weekend.  Canoes and  kayaks are available and complimentary for resort guests and offer a great way to explore the lake or to do some fishing.  Families staying at the resort will also enjoy the amenities offered at the resort’s Bright Star Park, like paddleboats and fishing equipment.

The Palmer Signature Golf Course, ranked as one of the best golf courses in the country, has tee times available for this weekend, however, guests should call in advance to make reservations.

A $3 gate fee will be charged to enter the State Park property.  For additional information or reservations, contact Stonewall Resort at 888-278-8150 or visit the website at www.StonewallResort.com

“You won’t want to miss this event-filled weekend which has something for just about everyone in the family,” Ludwig concluded.
